Crowns
Stainless Steel Crowns
Since stainless steel crowns are also silver in color, they are often confused with Amalgam (Silver) fillings; however, they do not contain any mercury. They are pre-fabricated and often used to restore teeth with cavities if the extent of decay is too large for a composite filling or the patient is at a high risk for cavities. The long term success rates for stainless steel crowns are the highest of all researched materials in pediatric dentistry (on primary molars).
Zirconia (White) Crowns
The most esthetic crown that is available in the market in pediatric dentistry. They are pre-fabricated and are used to restore anterior (front) and posterior (back) teeth. There are many variables that must be taken into account in the decision to use a zirconia crown to restore a primary (baby) tooth.
