Tongue & Lip Ties

Trouble with breastfeeding or nursing? Does your kiddo have a lot of reflux or is “colicky”?

There are both labial (lip) and lingual (tongue) frenulums. Everyone has them. Some are more obvious than others and some are less obvious. Dr. Wong follows the teachings of Dr. Richard Baxter at the Alabama Tongue-Tie Center and has taken his Tongue-Tied Academy Course and read his book Tongue-Tied. Similarly, he has also followed the work of Dr. Bobby Ghaheri. Lip and Tongue ties sometimes need to be treated. In instances of a diastema (gap between the front teeth), speech difficulties, or breastfeeding difficulties, a release of the tie may be indicated. Typically, a multi-disciplinary approach is best where your pediatric dentist will work in conjunction with your orthodontist, speech pathologist, lactation consultant or myofunctional therapist to determine the need of a release of the tongue and/or lip tie.

A release is otherwise known as a frenotomy, frenectomy, or a frenuloplasty. Each have a slightly different meaning but intend produce the same outcome
